And short story long: I try to keep a record of “klaracore” on this list/ image, and not long after I’ve heard Sound-Dust for the very first time, not only did it make it to the tippy top at #1, I’ve felt forced to reconsider what the peak of “klaracore” even is because it so clearly and obviously does not fit in with the big shots. Long story short, this record has caused a tectonic shift in what I deem “klaracore”, a nonsense word I’ve attached to my taste in music like many others in my community do. It’s one of the most obvious examples I can think of when it comes to albums that exceed the sum of their parts, and yet here I sit summing up its parts… all I can really hope for is that this massive mountain of text is able to convey at least part of why I find this piece of fancy elevator music so special.īut before I explain myself, allow me a brief detour to go into just how much this album grabbed and shook me over the past few weeks (and also, feel free to skip over this paragraph if you do not care). Sitting with this album for a while I’ve realized that despite the cotton candy pop aesthetic, the way it grabs a hold of you is rather subtle and sneaky, and the more you spend time staring at it the more mesmerizing it gets - so admittedly, part of why I’ve written such an insane amount of words is my specific lens and my unhinged obsession with this album. And for me, this was Stereolab’s “Sound-Dust”. Sometimes lightning really does strike 4 times in a row. And then, as rare as a comet hitting you on a leisurely walk, an album comes along that knocks you on your ass completely, leaving you on the floor in shambles as you try to piece your understanding of music back together. Something that speaks to you in your language. Then, possibly a few times in any given year, there’s an album to attach yourself to. Sometimes, a new record sinks its claws in with sharp lyricism or a hook, other times with mesmerizing production and a sense of adventure. Unsurprisingly, listening to such an exorbitant amount of new projects leads to fewer and fewer of them standing out - in comparison to the sheer mass of stuff it becomes hard to sound truly special among the rest. Whatever the case may be, I’m right there with you. Or perhaps you’re just keeping a general sense of dread at bay, still thinking that you want to hear all that’s worth hearing before you die one day. Maybe your intense curiosity and drive to find cool new music has long overridden your respect for your free time, or maybe it’s a coping mechanism meant to fill the void left by cancelled events. If you’re anything like me, there are days on which you listen to upwards of 10 new albums just to stamp each of them as “yeah, pretty neat” and then never listen to the majority of them again.
